1. Equipment. You need to have the right equipment. But only a few basic things are required. You’ll need a 4 to 5 gallon stock pot, a plastic bucket with a tight fitting lid, some tubs for siphoning, a bottle capper, bottle caps and bottles, of course.

2. Sanitize. All of your home brewing equipment has to be clean. There is nothing more important to making great home brew than cleanliness. Poor sanitation practices will result in homebrew that tastes like vinegar or worse.

3. Freshness. Before you begin brewing, make sure your yeast and hops are fresh. Most experienced home brewers also recommend using dry malt extract since it’s more stable than the liquid version.

4. Aging. You should age your newly bottled beer at 66-72 degrees for a couple of weeks. This will properly condition the beer and allow carbonation to develop. After this period, move it to a cooler area (approximately 55-65 degrees) to let  it to age for another 4 to 5 weeks.

5. Refrigeration. Once your brew is ready for consumption, you can move it to your refrigeration unit to keep it in a cool, dark environment.

6. Patience. It comes in handy while you’re waiting for your newly brewed beer to age. But, it’s oh so worth the wait!

As you can see, once you have the right equipment and follow a few basic rules, it’s easy to make your own brew. Once you give it a whirl, I think you’ll agree that there’s  nothing quite like that first taste of a beer when you brew your own.
